Antioxidants are the body's natural defence against the unwanted free
radicals contained in air pollution, cigarette smoke, ultraviolet radiation, pesticides and
preservatives. Antioxidants protect healthy cells by hunting for and destroying
free radicals.
Free radicals are created in airborne emissions, natural sunlight, chlorination and other chemical
sources. The body also creates these free radicals in the process of burning fat for energy. These free
radicals attack the body's cells, causing them to break down. Left unchecked, this may permanently
damage cells, and could lead to a variety of problems.
